OK....guess what these are!
« on: January 30, 2015, 11:49:15 AM »
These 2 items are not a pair, just two identical items. The scissors is there just for an idea of size; they're about 6" long. They were made following a request from a friend, and to comply with a challenge posed by 'Woodturners Unlimited', to make something using the dreaded skew (not for you, dr4g0nfly, we all know that you love the darned thing).
They were turned from two 7" lengths of rough sawn oak, using only a 1" flat skew chisel....no roughing out gouge, no spindle gouge and no parting tool.

BUT...what are they?>

Well, if you don't know what they are - how are we supposed to ??  ;) ;) ;)
You say that your skew is just a flat 1" skew, have you put a curve on the sharp bit ?
I found that when I started using the thing it bit back quite a lot, I put a curve on the sharp end
and it is now quite controllable. I think it's one of these tools Les that you just have to stick too and practice.
Good luck , you seem to be getting the hang of it quite well.  --  Julian

....not clear on what you mean, Julian...are you referring to a grind that makes the end skewed, but also convex? If so, the answer is no, it's just a traditional straight-line, skew grind.

Les,

I think the clue must be the bits of (thong?) fitted to them. My guess would be a tool for spinners, called something like 'threads per inch measure'.

Pete would know better though.

Les

I don't know what they are but not a bad job with a skew  :) I'm currently spending an hour or more a day using the skew to master the little blighter :)

It's getting better but I have still away to go as soon as I think got it - it bites back :) :) :)

And I probably could not enter, I don't use A skew, I have a large selection of them, all different!

I thought I knew what Julian meant but now I am not so sure. I assumed he was talking about grinding round the bottom point so it curves like the Lacer signature skew ?

I thought it was a skipping rope at first but the string is to short and coming out of the wrong end  :)

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I think they are for french knitting with the hole where the string is and a cap to cover the "nails".
