Oriental vessel
« on: March 02, 2015, 07:29:06 PM »
After some recent oriental inspiration ( a chinese takeaway and a kung fu film !! ) I came up with this ..... made from robinia I felled just before christmas  , it is pretty thin walled  ( 3 mm ) and pierced . It resembles an Opium diffuser found in far eastern brothels ,............ or so I am told  lol !!  Terry....

Hi Terry

Nice form but I think the base would be better half the thickness it draws your eye away from the form.
The base and lid tie the whole thing together well done.
I will probably get a rollicking now for giving critique when it has not been asked for.

Cheers George , and I agree with you about the base ( just something I had for something else ) but looks better for photography than wood on wood , .... a rollicking from who ?  comments / opinions are always expected / welcomed  positive or not , in fact no comments would be the worse case scenario !!     Terry....

I think the rules are you must only give critique if it is asked for but you get to know them that are happy to get critique and them that aren't

With the exception of the detail that George has mentioned, this really works for me. Is the piercing based on anything specific, or is it a bit of free-formed piercing?

I really like that.
I have had funny feelings after Chinese takeaways myself but they have never produced something like that.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Terry are you sure that it was ( a chinese takeaway and a kung fu film !! ) and not one of them 100 year old eggs that you were thinking about mate.
Well done on trying something inspirational, I like the shape the wood and the piercing (but I'm not that keen on the top) lovely work well done. Les

Terry    The piercing on the white wood suits and balances the whole piece very well.

Very nice indeed, love the form and I particularly like the hint/inclusion of the plant in the right of the picture, nicely done.

Terry I agree with all the other comments but would like to point out that the top of the vase (IMHO) is slightly the wrong shape for the lid, what I mean is they do not appear to mate very well. Nice piece though. Well done.

This works for me but I agree with George, the base is a little thick, might be better if it was thinner but with a small foot at each corner lifting it to a similar height.

Can't comment on what it looks like, my time in the Forces never took me out east!
