« on: March 13, 2015, 09:37:50 PM »
Haven't posted much ;lately. too busy making bobbins LOL.
Had to pop down to the Dansel gallery to put some more pieces in, here are some of the ones

Amphora, apple on burr with cultured pearls,   apple hollow form, brass inlay in natural splits: ebony and pewter finial and collar. C&C welcome but I might sulk if you're mean LOL

Saw some of your work there, love that big fat coloured hollow form. Sort of marbly effect.. very effective.

Pete, I like the piece with the pearls for some reason, not sure why but it appeals to me and makes me think of finding treasure and would happily display it in my home. The hollow form does not get me excited as for me the wood is not pretty and it just doesn't make me want to pick it up and feel it.(sorry)

Which just goes to show how opinions differ :)
I love the hollow form, especially how you have done the top and finial, that sets it apart. ( hopefully the kids won't use it as a spinny top ). I like the amphora aw well but have commented on that before.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Pete...a couple of interesting pieces. When I first looked at the profile of the amphora, I thought that there was a bit of a step in the line of its sides, but closer examination appears to show numerous ripples and dips. Did you wet-turn it and let it settle into its own shape?

I turn things like this from green wood, two reasons. One because it is ,ore likely to stay in one piece, less brittle and more flexible and secondly as you say it dries out and takes a shape of its own. The idea is to make it look as naturally decayed or worn as possible. Sometimes where there is a big split like this, if turned thin enough the lip on the split actually curls in on itself.

I like the idea of encouraging wet wood with a split to curl in on itself by turning thinly. Can you do anything else to persuade the wood to curl in?

I have heard but not tried that if you soak the wood in a bucket of water it will react though not sure. It is the different densities of the wood and moisture content that causes the wood to split or dry out this way so can't say for sure.
