Leopard skin bowl!
« on: April 25, 2015, 08:35:02 PM »
This was meant to be a plain, simple bowl for the shop, but I couldn't resist playing with fire!

The effect was done with a fish-scale nib and each scale took several seconds, between burning and waiting for the iron to heat up again ready for the next one.

It's an 8" diameter bowl, finished with micro-crystaline wax.

C&C always welcome.

This is one of those pieces that I don't want to like fora number of reasons but sadly I do. I don't like leopard skin, not a big fan of ash and the shape isn't right for me so why do I like it? Must be old age creeping up on me LOL

....ha ha! Gotcha!

Give in  to it, Pete....old age has mellowed your taste and you can now like something that hasn't got a hole in it.

It is certainly eye catching, think i like it.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I like the shape and the Ash not sure about the pattern.
I am a bit concerned as I am starting to like plain wood and even more worrying Pete is starting to like coloured work.

I like that, Les. Nice pattern and certainly not overdone. The band of pattern lifts the whole piece. Well done. Malcolm.

So you've been 'playing with fire', I don't think you'll get burnt with this one though!

 ;D ;D ;D

sorry les, just saying what i see...

it's a nicely turned bowl mate but i will put myself in the camp of i wouldn't have turned it myself unless commissioned to.

if i'm to give any constructive criticism then i'll say that the leopard pattern might look more at home on a rim of some sort as personally i don't think it looks right round the side of it.

OK...but what you did not see was an attempt to replicate pyrography 'with a fag butt'.
Might I suggest that you choose your words more succinctly. I have no issue with anyone disliking the effect....that is the nature of personal taste, but to suggest that I '...got bored and started playing with a fag butt' is rather insulting.

i never meant to be insulting les and i apologise if you were.

as i said i say what i see and to my eyes they look like lots of cigarette burns.

i can see how you would get an effect of fish scales using that nib (not seen that before) but how long did it take to do the whole bowl?

by the way, feel free to ignore anything i say that is out of turn as i tend to speak (or type) my mind and it's occasionally not always polite but that's who i am.

Now Ash normally calls for color, so how about setting the black off with orange. Then you'll have Leopard skin or is this a snow Leopard.
