So I found this Oak post
« on: April 24, 2015, 06:00:43 PM »
While at the show at Yandles outside the shop entrance I noticed some old (past their best) oak posts at knockdown prices. I'd been looking for one of these as there was something I wanted to have a go at. Finally getting some time to turn for me, yesterday I made this.

I scorched the post and then turned a classically shaped Heart Vase with the trumpet fluted top. The Classic form complete with cracks and knots gives a juxtaposition to the old burnt, cracked wood I like.

It's only drilled, not hollowed, it stands 225mm high by 100mm square. Finish is one coat of Danish Oil then a buff with a micro-crystalline wax.

Greenman, this is the one I said I'd post.

C& C as you will

Wow, Bryan.....the words 'Silk purse' come to mind, but you have soundly disproved the saying that reckons it's not possible to make such a thing out of a sow's ear! Your spindle skills really came to the fore here and as you say, the meeting of classic style with distressed features is just so right.

I like the concept Bryan, well turned and finished. Certainly would make a nice garden ornament especially in Oak as it won't rot at least not for several hundred years.

Eric, don't sit on it, go turn something...

Mark, I wanted to make one of these after visiting a few stately homes and seeing stone ones (although much bigger) in their gardens. So I can see where your suggestion has merit.

David, it looks a little better now, I noticed a line of wax in the foot bead, now removed.

George, Thank you, I will.
