Excellent use of dye, brings out the figure beautifully. How did you get the inside edge so sharp when using dyes?

I am sure I remember showing you that when you were here or maybe not.

I like this effect, bringing the patterns of the grain out beyond what is visible on the plain wood. Really brings everything to life.

thanks for comments,
Don't remember you showing me that George (One of the very few things you didn't manage to pack in to that day! - I seem to recall that afterwards I described you to someone as a walking encyclopaedia of finishing techniques :)  ); I've a feeling I picked that up from a Drozda video.
fuzzyturns - I tend to extend the curve (of the rim in this case) beyond what I need, colour the whole required area and then cut back/tidy up the working portion and outside lip to produce a lovely clean line - takes a bit of thought and planning ahead, but hey...if thats what it takes!

Hi Jason and Fuzzy another way is to cover the end grain with wax polish so that stains cant travel up the end grain.

George (GBF, that is): we worked exclusively with stains, which work very differently from dyes. Stains are are pigment particles suspended in a carrier. They tend to penetrate much less deep than dyes, which are pigments dissolved in the carrier (i.e. no particles, the solution goes down to molecular level).
I have tried the method of covering the end grain with wax or sanding sealer, and it does work to some degree (better on stains than on dyes), but proper dyes have a habit of going quite deep, obviously depending on the type of wood used. Maple is better than others, as it can be quite dense, and the dyes will only travel about 1-3mm.
Having said that, on occasion I had dyes go completely through from the outside of a box to the inside, more than 5mm. When that happens, clean lines as in your bowl above become very difficult to achieve.

I have been using stains, dyes, inks, paints and other colouring agents for the last 12 years and more but I bow to your greater knowledge fuzzy
You have achieved a great deal in the one year that you have been turning  and I am always open to learning new technique's.

Hi Jason

You've achieved a very stunning effect with this piece, it's a well balanced form with the full unbroken colored rim, which blend well too.

Hi Jason....the matter of taste regarding colour is very personal, and this is a colour that I don't particularly like, but that does not detract from the fact that it is a very well executed, fine piece of turning.

I really like this one Jason the colours seem quite subtle and calm. Have you got a satin finish on this it suits the piece more than a high gloss finish would have done in my opinion.
