Spalted Hornbeam
« on: July 01, 2015, 12:33:27 PM »
Turned from Spalted Hornbeam and measures 6" X 2 3/4" .

Turned with a bowl gauge and scraper to finish. Chucking point removed after reversing to leave a slight foot to raise the bowl a little.

Sanded from 240grit down to 600grit then 5 coats of hard wax oil left to dry for 1 week then buffed to a gloss with the chestnut buffing system.

Tried to keep the shape simple to show the grain.

Very nice! Both finish and shape. I notice that you left the pith in. Let's just hope this wood was dry already, otherwise you may well end up with loads of little cracks in a few weeks/months.

Lovely colour and really like the way you have taken the edge in slightly to draw the eye. Neat

That's a win then.

I like this, the radial medullary rays from the pith make it a winner. As Fuzzy says, I hope it does not crack though.

A well turned and finished piece Derek...... The shape certainly suits the wood.

I seem to have been a bit slow on getting around to replying. I would like to thank you all for the great comments, I went to a small show this Saturday and one of the first bowls to sell was this one.
