Do you have to anneal the metal before turning it - ie get it red hot and let it cool to change it's malleability?

Nope. I got some cutoffs from a local scrap dealer, and they looked like they came straight off a production lathe, complete with oil and swarf. Put it straight onto my lathe, rough cut the shape, then used metal files to refine the shape, then sanding paper down to about 400. Then parted it off, reversed, cleaned up the bottom, and buffed it with a buffing wheel and a bit of paste. The whole process took about 1 hour from start to finish.
