Pebbles
« on: July 12, 2015, 09:53:23 PM »
I spend a fair bit of time on the beautiful local coastline and sometimes stack / balance rocks and pebbles ( just for fun ) and they add nicely to landscape photographs ... which led to a bit of fairly direct inspiration as seen in last pic ..... the bottom pebble is hollow and the upper 2 joined  creating a box / container .. displayed on a bit of driftwood ...various woods used for sake of contrast and a non polished finish , I have a few done and plenty of ideas for textured , scorched maybe even stained  finishes ....

Never done it myself but seen some amazing sculptural pieces done this way. never thought of transfering it to wood though. Very effective.

Hi Twig,
Fabulous photographs is that Lulworth Cove I can see in the background? What a place to get inspired to turn your lovely piece.

Great idea Twig, looks very effective.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

TWiG,

A very clever idea and the use of the driftwood really sets the whole thing off tying the concept back to it's beach origins.

Ah .. nice bit of coast ... Meadfoot Beach, Thatcher Rock and Ore Stone maybe.

Your work does you justice, both beach art and turning.

Last pebble columns I'd seen in any number, were on St Agnes, beach beyond Beady Pool.

Cheers  David

Thanks for the comments guys , .... the location of the first stone pile is about 6 foot tall and at  Prawle point ( S Devon)  in November believe it or not , and the second is near Lands End looking out to the rocks known as the Brisons and believe it or not the very round rocks are NOT sea worn pebbles but are the result of glaciation ( before my time ) and they drop out of a low cliff on to the beach just as you see them in the photos and are protected by law !!, both fantastic locations , the last one is in my hallway !! ha ha .... Terry ...

Very creative and inspirational. Just shows how our natural surroundings can present ideas to us, if we as willing to see them. Malcolm.

I tend to be fed up with so called drfitwood creations but if more were like this I could change my mind. This has some imagination and style which is sadly lacking in most I see.
