Green Ash Discolouration
« on: July 21, 2015, 05:44:16 PM »
I turn a lot of green ash and one thing that always amazes me is the speed with which it turns colour after cutting. Even the whitest of sapwood goes a distinct pink colour within a minute or two - a feature experienced only with green timber. Does anyone out there know what causes this discolouration? I recently finished a large bowl and had to really struggle to sand the pink out of it as it seemed to be more than superficial.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

It's oxidisation. Usually fades back to "normal" eve after sealing and finishing. I wouldn't worry about it.
