Apple....
« on: July 31, 2015, 09:21:04 AM »
This is from a piece of apple that's been sitting around in the garden for many years. I've tried to turn some of it previously but without success....I just couldn't get a good enough finish off the tool, the rotten bits ripped far too much.  Happy with the finish of this piece though.  Not entirely happy with the shape, wish I'd curved it wound further on the base and overall turned it thinner, but still happy with it  as a learning piece.  Love the spalting too  ;D ;D  C&C welcome.  8" x 3" approx

A lovely bit of wood but I do not like the bottom in my opinion it should either be a flat bottom or have a foot not both.

It was the foot that also caught my eye and I agree with George. But an amazing piece of wood and I like the simple shape.

As with previous comments, it's a nice little bowl, but the base spoils it. Viewed from a high angle, with the foot not visible, it looks like a stable, functional bowl with a wide base, which is fine. The heavy wall is fine as well, but, when viewed from a lower level, that false foot becomes obvious. Frankly, the bowl would have worked well without the false foot, and it would also have worked well with that narrow foot if the wall of the bowl had been blended into it more sympathetically. What you've ended up with is a compromise that just doesn't work.

If it could ever be possible for a bowl .. this is a cheerful, jolly sweet piece, then it is Apple.

As golden rule, 3rds .. the wide base as it is without the small foot fits that rule.

Seeing things .. we're being watched, clearly, small single eye in lower picture, just off center.

Thanks folks, think I got a little over-excited by the wood and lost focus on the form.  Oh well, at least I have quite a bit more of this so I can try again....

Cheers

Chris,

It's a learning curve with a lot to learn, take little steps.

Tool control, Sanding, finishing, shape and design.

You're doing good so far, be encouraged and remember, we were once all where you are now.

Great wood, post the next piece from it as well please.
