Wow, what can I say?
Many thanks to everybody that has taken the time to post very comprehensive and detailed suggestions. It is very much appreciated.
However I think George is correct, I should be putting my walking boots on before my running shoes.
Below is my first attempt, unfortunately the top part of the outer bowl broke apart while cutting it on the band saw. I now put gaffer tape around the top part until it is glued in place.
I’ll try and salvage, sorry redesign, this bowl and tackle slightly simpler projects before I put the running shoes on again.

Well, as first attempts go, that's pretty impressive. Having said that, due to its design (only a bottom part to the lower bowl), it's also technically a lot easier to do than the other one. Nevertheless, nice idea and good execution.

Well the piece was not totally lost ... something really nice has come out of it after all.
