I 've looking at some of your work and I must say I'm slightly embarrassed at posting my work but, please take a look and feel free to comment on this 10" x 1.5" Amazaque Platter.

Welcome to the Forum, Steve, glad to see you've come out from lurking ...  :D ...

And what a delightful first post, shouldn't be embarrassed at all, we've all been there, and can often achieve to do the same...   :-[ ..

Very nice clean design, not a mark to be seen and the finish is excellent with high shine.  Counter and tiled back may distract from the image.

Cheers  David

never be embarrassed to display work, if you've only just started then it will be known that it won't be top notch for a while...

in saying that you must have been turning a while because you have a top notch platter there mate, justice has most certainly been done to such a lovely bit of timber.

i like the three tone yew bowl in the other post too.

Hi David

Many thanks for the welcome and first comments. Photography really isn't my thing, but I'll take on board what you've said and look at how others photograph their work.

Cheers

Thanks mate. I have been turning on and off for about 8 years now (mainly off), but I'm never happy with my finishing. I always think there's room for improvement.

Hi Steve ( we are going to have to start numbering you all ) welcome to the forum, thats a good looking platter.
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

As a newbie myself I know how hard it is to make your first post but you're off to a great start.
As a photographer, I agree with previous posts. Simplify the background.
But that doesn't take away from the quality of this piece. A simple shape, which I like, and well finished.
Well done and welcome.

I look forward to seeing more from you.

Ralph.

PS. Not come across any scary posted here, so far ;D

Hi Steve....when you make an effort as good as this, a few simple tips will help to take a better photograph to do justice to your work. Yes, you can spend a fortune on equipment, but you don't have to! Get a piece of fabric which has a good contrast to timber - don't use natural browns and fawns, but go for a simple black, white or dark grey - but whatever you choose, don't choose a shiny cloth as it bounces light around too much and causes patches of glare on the subject. Then simply use a few piece of adhesive tape to tape it to the tiles and drape it down over the worktop.....that will give you a seamless backdrop and base to take your pics on, and can easily be rolled up for storage.

The simple trick is to make the background as featureless as possible, and with a high contrast to the colour of your timber.

Get that right and your half way there....then you can start thinking about light. On a fine day, there's few light-sources better than your garden - you can always drape your backdrop-cloth against a garden shed, or something!
