Gorgonian Sculpture
« on: August 16, 2015, 01:39:58 PM »
The Gorgonian Sea-fan Sculpture was one of the pieces I took along to the AWGB seminar.
The base is basically an upside down bowl. The fans are each turned from a 40cm diameter blank, reduced to 1.4mm thick with the outer 2" edge flared out to 5mm for the base of each stem. The fan was then cut out and pierced, painted, then the supporting wood removed from around the fish prior to finishing the final details. I love the way the stems wave in the breeze as you walk past it!
comments welcome.

I do not understand why this piece is drawing so few comments.

It is, incredible. I hate to think how many hours work have gone into it.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Well I saw this in the "flesh" at the seminar. I was frightened to walk past it should it break as it looked so delicate. I do a bit of piercing my self so can appreciate the amount of work that has gone into it. As I told you at the semonar Jason this is a beautiful piece.

There can be no getting away from the fact that this is an amazing piece of work, on many levels and I've no doubt that it draws a lot of attention where-ever it is seen. I'm in awe of the complexity of your work, Jason, but there is one small detail that I don't like, and that's the base of the stems; to me they appear almost crow's-foot-like. If this is what the coral's foot is like in real life, then I'll eat my words and shut up in future. :)

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

You are absolutely right Les!
In fact there are a few things that can be improved (thanks go to Nick Agar for a private critique)

1. make the roots more realistic
2.undercut the rock to give it shadow
3.break up the outline of the fans more
4. to incorporate different perspectives of the fish

personally 5. i don't like the stem shading but have already improved it in the piece that I made after this Eugorgia Aurantia.

I always appreciate honesty! - thanks Les, and to all of you for your comments.
