One for George and Pete!
« on: August 23, 2015, 06:21:32 PM »
Given the remarks that George and Pete made about my last bowl needing a bead to define the rim, I decided to make a new one with a bead. Here it is....a lovely piece of brown oak from Andy, at Prime Timber.

12" (30cm) diameter and 2" (5cm) deep, finished with microcrystaline wax.

....horrible colour in this macro-shot of the bead; sorry about that, but don't have the foggiest idea why the camera should change the colour so profoundly.

C&C always welcome, Les.

Thanks Ralph, glad you like it. I set the price of pieces in my shop by working out what they cost me, then adding an extra tenner for everyone who says they like it.  ;) ;D

hi Les the last one was nice but I like this a lot more.

Regards George

Thanks George....have you dealt with Andy? I must say that I've had some amazing timber from him....brown oak, elm, walnut....quality stuff.

Not a big fan of edges without some sort of definition personally so this one works much better for me. As you say beautiful wood well used. No doubt both will sell as we all see things differently.

Pete and George....'an edge without definition'....I hadn't really thought about that, but I can see what you mean. At first I thought to myself that I had seen George make many a bowl (in his demo at our club) where there was not a bead to define the edge of the bowl, but thinking about it, the rim of each of those bowls was decorated, whereas the bowl itself was natural. That's something I'll give careful thought to in the future.

I think it would have looked a lot nicer without the bead.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Les,

your last platter (Quilted Elm) got away without needing a rim as the lip was higher in the middle than at the rim, that enabled the shadow-line to work for you.

This platter's the lip falls inwards, a breakpoint by way of a bead or other decoration is needed to delineate the rim from the bowl section.

And if every 'I Like it' adds a tenner'...

I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ... I Like it ...

Hope it sells well!
