Open segmented vase

This is an open segment vase about 12 inches high and 13.5 inches at it's widest. It utilizes the golden ratio(rule of thirds) in it's design in that the widest point is at the golden ratio in the height, the ratio of widest to top and bottom, and the open gap to a full size segment are both to the golden ratio. It has 41 rows each of 16 segments of Holly, Purple Heart and Wenge. It is being donated to Prostate Cymru (Welsh prostate cancer research charity) for auction later in 2015.

First of all congratulations on making such a stunning piece, I hope it raises a ton of cash for the charity. Secondly, how you have the patience to assemble all those pieces is beyond me, I would have to be in jail before I could bring myself to try something like this

Everything flows right with this piece Malcolm. From the shape to the contrast in the woods.
Must admire you skill and patience in the creation of this piece. Feel sure it will do very well at the auction.

Fabulous piece..
Thanks for allowing us a preview.
I hope the bidders have deep enough pockets to do justice to it.

I note it's going to auction for a good cause.
Well done on donating it and the time it took to create. It will go to a person who wants it and will be cherished fo a very long time.

I keep looking at this thread and trying to make my mind up about what to say. The truth of the matter is that I don't like this sort of segmented work; it's far too fussy and contrived for me. Having said all that, it doesn't mean that I'm any great arbiter of taste, and I'm clearly in the minority here. I am in awe of the amount of work and of the skill and dedication that it has taken to produce this. The fact that it is being donated to such a worthy cause just heightens the sense of worth of this piece and of your work, Malcy. Hats off to you sir!

Looked at this a couple of times because it really isn't my type of work but something kept nagging at me about it. Looking this time I see a hot air balloon maybe that's it. Like Les I appreciate the work and skill in making it, far more patience than I have and hope the money it raises reflects that. I'm sure it will find a good home with some more appreciative soul than myself. hats off to you for the work, skill and generosity you are showing.

This must have taken a lot of time and planning to put together and it's paid off.
I hope that all your time and effort pay off for the charity.
Good luck

Fine looking piece, being open looks like it was a significant challenge with turning the inside etc and it adds all the more to the piece.
