Christmas is coming............
« on: September 16, 2015, 12:38:23 PM »
Spending the day finishing off and testing some Christmas stock and photographing it all. I find that goblets and candlesticks are a good seller at this time of the year so here are a few examples of ones I am making.

As long as someone likes them enough to buy them George. I do have one that holds a full bottle, might prefer that one LOL.

It is very rare that I see a Goblet that I like.

Hi Pete...I really like both sets of candlesticks and especially the candle cups on the first pair; the black works well with the spalting. I've yet to make any goblets, but have concerns about getting proportions right....I guess that we're all so used to seeing glass, with its thin rims and delicate stems, that transferring the form into wood seems tricky to me.

Thank you Les. Google chalices and goblets and have a look at the shapes and proportions. I make the bowl part so that itis thin at the lip and tapers thickr as it goes down. if you are doing medieval style ones you can go for slightly thicker lips as the original ones were ususally made from pottery or metal and were thicker. I admit that a lot of my influence comes not from other wood turners generally but from other disciplnes and I am fortunate in having friends who are designers of renown who are quite hapy to tell me where I am going wrong. I may be wrong here but wood turners seem to want goblets to be delicate, thin stems, with ultra thin cups which are totally impractical and as I only make goblets for use I don't do those. Bottom line: These sell, the wonderful, well made artistic ones don't.

Pete on the way to the town hall tomorrow have a look in the gothic type shop in the shires. They have some...... fairly nice goblets, I think they are pewter or plastic but the designs are quite nice.

Tghank you John, The gothic styles tend to translate well to wood and sell well so it could be a good source of inspiration.
