Simple cherry bowl
« on: October 05, 2015, 11:03:49 PM »
OK, I did listen. So this really is a very simple bowl from wild cherry. It ended up a bit thinner than anticipated, as it got knocked around the workshop a bit and I needed to remove some rather deep scratches, resulting wall thickness between 1/4 and 1/3 of an inch. Diameter is about 9".  Finished with danish oil. All C&C welcome.

There's a good depth of colour in that piece and the simplicity of the shape is right for it.....lets the eye concentrate on the grain instead of the form.

You have captured the grain pattern very well in this functional bowl
  Well turned and finished

Cherry is not my favourite wood, even free. Though I've yet to see any with a grain so pronounced or coloured as this. If it could all look like this it would be a far nicer wood.

Good turning and finish as well.

Nice form but is that sanding marks by the foot or is it the picture .

It's neither, it's some strange grain pattern in the wood. I presume you are referring to the odd, dull-looking patches around the highlight?

The bit that is dull by the base that goes against the grain on the second pic.
Thank you for explaining.

this patternation is usually referred to as olive cherry i assume because it superficially looks similar to the olive markings you get in ash.

the yellow is a strange colour and it was only earlier this year that i was given a cherry tree myself that is completely yellow, if i hadn't been given it i would have tried to argue that it's not cherry. other than these two occasions i've never seen cherry this colour, ain't wood wonderful.

Well, I can absolutely vouch for this being cherry, because I saw the tree before it was cut down. It was quite a monster, trunk diameter 1' from the ground around 2'.
And I still have large chunks of it in storage. I agree that the coloration is extreme.
I have another bowl of the same material, showing pretty much the same colour pattern. And then I made another of my balance pieces. I'll post this separately, as I noticed I hadn't posted it before.

Based on George's remark I had another close look at the foot, and full marks go indeed to George. There are some rough spots there, although they are not sanding marks, they are spots where I haven't polished the oil finish enough, and that's why they show up in the picture.
