Desk Box
« on: October 05, 2015, 10:55:55 PM »
Haven't posted for a while, as I am doing quite a bit of preparation work for the future (rough turning etc). However, here's a box I recently finished. The box itself is figured sycamore with a light touch of dye and finished with wax. The base is ebonized cherry, and the clip holding the box to the stem is leadwood.
No doubt I will again have unwittingly copied somebody somewhere in the world, so let me apologize in advance. Otherwise all C&C welcome.

That's an interesting juxtaposition of shapes that works well together, for me, and if it has been done before, then that's news to me!
Out of interest, how did you make the join between the three vertical elements?

Fuzzy to me this looks likean original piece as i have seen nothing like it anywhere else. I quite like it for what it is although it is not something I would buy, personal taste an all that. However my one criticism is the burnt decorative lines, I feel that they should be the same thickness on each piece or there should be a greater difference in width.

John: I am still experimenting with different wire types for the burnt lines. You are right, of course, the should all be the same width.
Les: The answer is very simple: CA glue.

Fuzzy the wire I use is the green plastic coated stuff from the garden centre, strip off the plastic and it is stainless steel beneath, they last forever (nearly)

I started out with a copper wire (essentially a stripped electric cable), but that burnt through in no time at all, just can't handle the heat. Now I am using a piece of curtain wire. It has a steel core and some strands wrapped around. Somebody mentioned that cheap electric guitar strings are good. I'll try that next.

I use a cheese wire, it seems to do a fine job.

I like this piece, interesting shapes and a nice idea.
I, personally, would have made the "post"  a little box and lid as well.

Yep, that's precisely what my wife said to (after it was finished). Next time.

A very neat concept which we like Wolfgang..... We can see this leading to other things.
A well turned and finished piece.

Well it certainly is stunningly different.

I can see it on a desk but not sure what you'd put in it, paperclips?  In this e-communication age more like a holder for your USB cable.

Push this around a bit, even just on paper. See where the idea take you, I think it's got legs.

Thank you all for the feedback. In terms of what to put in: the box is big enough to hold pens or pencils, the usual sort of thing one would find on a desk. Of course, it's mostly decorative, but I think on an executive's desk it wouldn't have to do much anyway.
To give you some idea of size: with the lid on, it's about 10" tall in total, and the box has an internal diameter of about 3".
