Serendipity
« on: October 24, 2015, 11:02:39 AM »
I was turning a piece of laburnum, nothing particular in mind, just rounding off to see what the wood was like as it had a split in it. I turned all the bark off and the shape reminded me of a chinese vase so that's where I went. Too lazy to hollow out so made a candle pillar for the coming shows, things like this sell well this time of the year. The splits have been filled with brass and the candle plate is beaten copper. C&C welcome as always

I really like the foot...it allows the body to slim down, yet also allows a little more stability to the form. Nice one, Pete.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Very nice Pete and shows us all that we don't have to hollow everything :)

All the best

Thank you les and Ed.

I was in two minds about the foot as the original vases went both ways but decided on the foot for the reasons you mention Les. Not hollowing was as much a mercenary decision as anything Ed. I can get almost as much for this as is as I could if I hollowed it at shows. maybe more at a gallery but they take a lot lnger to do hollow and also longer to sell.

Pete, Strangely it does have a ceramic look to the shape about it.

Clever idea, making the candles pillar from it.

Thank you Brian, Oddly I am not too keen on the original chinese vases, always look too heavy to me but must admit to being pleased with this.
