Apple & Elm
« on: October 31, 2015, 11:14:31 AM »
Couple of new pieces.  First one is a piece of apple that came down about 6 years ago.  Much of that particular log was rotted beyond redemption but this piece came up nicely.  Second is a piece of elm that came down a couple of years ago.  Turns very nicely. It's a first go at doing something to the outside.....can't remember where I saw the photo of the piece that inspired this.  Quite pleased with it for a first go but plenty I'll do differently next time.  C&C etc very welcome.

I like them both. I do think that on the first one the bowl could have been quite a bit bigger, but that's personal taste. Looks like a nice finish, too.

Shame so much of the Apple went to waste, it's a lovely wood to turn and you've done that bit proud.

The Elm bowl, I like the raised bead detail, you've achieved that well. The beads are even and the wood between removed cleanly.

I first expanded the second (upside down) image, and saw an Apiary (beehive), the old fashioned ones from straw.

What you have made of the woods is grat but I have to say that that is the plainest apple I have ever seen. Maybe I have been lucky but all the apple I have had has been full of colour and crazy graining.

Thanks folks.

Fuzzy - I'm at a stage of trying different forms.....trying not to do the same thing twice which is why the bowl is almost exaggeratedly small.  Having said that, I really quite like it  :)

Bryan - Yes, I nearly cried when I realised how bad much of it was.  The other large bit was gorgeous but rotten as heck.  Found another well spalted apple log at the weekend but think it will be a challenge to get anything out of it at all.  Never mind, more coming soon.  How's it turn fresh?

Pete - Out of all the apple I've had this is certainly the plainest.

It has always been fairly easy to turn fresh for me but I couldn't guarantee it will be like that for all apple, there are so many different types. The wood I have had has usually come from very old orchards and so has been bent, twisted etc. Like most fruit woods I found it can split fairly easily.
