Pear with leaf
« on: November 08, 2015, 07:17:36 AM »
Just finished making a giant pear.
I thought the leaf may be of interest as it
was quite easy to make and not too time consuming.
I have seen the idea before in the Axminster Catalogue,
but the leaf was cast in metal and it wasn't to hand!
Regards

One thing I have never been able make successfully is fruit but looks like you do't have that problem. Wood looks like iroko?

Haggy,

You've done that well.

The problem with turning fruit is
1. There is such a huge variation of shapes, even for apples and pears, and
2. People have an instinctive mental image of what it should look like.

So to make one that fits both is not an easy thing to always achieve.

A fine pear, Haggy, and I love the leaf. Coincidentally, I've just picked up a commission for a couple of giant apples, which I've made out of apple (wood, not fruit). If I might be so bold as to mention it, there is one slight issue with the layout; the leaf should blend into the stalk, not the fruit, and it should be pointing towards the fruit, but I guess that's nit-picking!

Thank you for the comments.
The pear was 200mm(8") tall and made from
an off-cut of iroko- Pete was right.
I wanted to add the leaf to see if it were possible
to make one that wouldn't snap.  Thanks for your suggestions too Les,  a good idea to make an apple from Apple.I also think the
Leaf is out of proportion and may look better if it was made from the same wood as the pear.  I may try again
and see if I can improve.
How do you plan to attach the leaf to your apple Les?  It would be interesting to see how others have solved this problem.
Thank you for your replies.  Haggy

....no leaves on my apples, Haggy. The customer has requested just the fruit. They are going to be presented to researches at the National Botanic Garden, who have been working on the Welsh Apple Project.

Can't remember who did it now but a couple of years ago someone on one of the forums shared a bowl of fruit that was made from different woods and you had a job to see that it wasn't real, each fruit was a wood that was the right colour etc. Fruit seem simple but getting them to lok right is a lot harder than it seems. As Brian says, we all have a preceived idea of what it should look like.
