Rip off or what?
« on: January 22, 2016, 06:19:23 PM »
All I want are some spare screws for my nova chucks. Everywhere I have found them on line so far the postage is nearly twice as much as the screws. £3 for the screws and nearly £6 for p+P.
Anyone know what the thread is, if so I'll go have a look in my local hardware shop.

Pete.
the toolpost sells them in packs of 10 (what he calls 8 to use and 2 to lose :) )
Have a look on his site, Its only 2 miles from me, I would be happy to get them and post to you, they should go as a standard letter.

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Pete,
Yes some sellers are definitely a rip-off. The screws are almost ordinary M6 countersunk socket heads, as sold by a well known online supplier, product code 96477. However, I say almost as they are slightly longer than the originals (16mm as opposed to 10mm but shouldn't be a problem to anyone with a hacksaw or bench grinder) and, more problematic, the head is slightly larger than the originals. That isn't a problem for most of the jaws, but if you need to you can file/grind the heads so they can be inserted into the holes on the jaws. The good news is the current price is £2.65 for a bag of 50, and they are stainless steel. I would offer to post you some but at that price, I am sure it is easier to get them from your local 'fixer'.
Hope that helps,
Regards,

Pete,

I've done this one previously, I'll have a look see if I can find the post.

But basically, take one of the screws to your local Tools & Fixings shop, I did that and got about 10 for £1.

But they don't come with 'Nova' engraved on them.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Here, you go, no extra info but shows what I managed to buy.

Though it seems I did not quite remember to quantity or price correct. But still far better than you are offered.

I  needed some replacement screws for my Viper3 chuck and bought some M6 countersunk head from Orbital Fasteners in Watford. The length was correct but the heads were too large so I  ground them down. The hex socket was also a different size to the originals.

I  would  NOT use Stainless Steel screws because one could  NOT use a magnet to find them in the shavings on the floor!

I  can thoroughly recommend Orbital Fasteners. They will sell single screws but at 1/100th of the  100 price.

It's worth ringing and asking for a copy of their catalogue.

Is  this the sort of thing you are seeking?

https://www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk/en/products/m6x10-socket-screw-countersunk-high-tensile-grade-10-9-self-colour-din-7991

And you can request a free catalogue to be sent by Royal Mail Letterpost here:
https://www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk/en/advice/brochure-request

When I  took a pile of catalogues to my Club, members must have found them useful since they vanished within a few minutes.
