Burr oak bowl
« on: March 04, 2016, 09:51:47 PM »
I've had this piece of Burr Oak hanging around the workshop for a while now. It measures 24"x16"x4". It was very unevenly balanced and I wasn't sure whether to cut it up or leave it in one piece. I opted for the latter as I kind of liked the overall shape. I will admit that I cheated slightly as I ran the surface over a planer to see what it looked like underneath the grime, stain and other marks on it. This is what made me decide to keep it in one piece.
So here it is, it was rock hard to turn but nice and slow and with sharp tools I managed to get a finished piece that I like, I added the bead as I thought it would give it a wee bit more character. Finished with three coats of Danish oil on it.

C & C's welcome.

Cheers Gary

It's a whopper and at that size it must have strong visual impact. I'd love to see a profile shot, though, as these pics don't really give a feel for the overall shape.

This really works for me in every way. I have a number of larger burrs and keep thinking of doing this type of thing with them but ...one day perhaps LOL. Be happy if they turned out like this one.

Gorgeous.  The bead gives a real definition to the bowl and adds a formality that lifts the whole piece.

Gary,

It totally works for me.

More so as the bead surrounding the area with the more cracked areas makes me see it as a planet/moon with the crevasses and cracks visible through a telescope.

cheers for the comment s Les, attached are a couple of underneath photos. It was very unbalanced so underneath is simple as I couldn't do much more and leave enough meat on it. 2 without oil on 1 with.
Cheers Gary
