red dot vase
« on: March 22, 2016, 10:21:46 PM »
Sycamore, about 6 1/2" tall and 3" diameter. Dyed with textile dyes, carved (the vertical groove) and milled (the recess for the button). The button itself is made from padauk. Finished with a bit of satin acrylic lacquer.
This is essentially a prototype, and I have a few more along similar veins, with variations on the theme.

Before anybody says it, I will say it myself: yes, there is a small scratch in the wood. All C&C welcome.

is that another familiar bit of sycamore i see?

if it was from my scrap pile i'm glad it's being put to good use.

very nicely turned i must say, my personal taste is that it's too abstract for me.

Hi Fuzzy
I like the concept but for something like this, the execution needs to be precise so as not to catch the eye. The edges of the red dot appear rough, also the padauk grain at 45' to the sycamore looks wrong, would a solid red disk look better? I would also prefer the red line from the rim to be more defined, maybe even band sawn with the inside edges painted red.
As I said, I do like the idea.
Cheers
Rick

I agree with Rick, whilst the concept is sound, there's a few details that need sorting. I wonder what the line would look like if it were to follow the curve of the rim and then sweep down on a curve to a dot!

Les, that's precisely what the next piece is going to look like. It's not finished yet, but will be soon.

I do take on board the comments about precision, and agree. As said, this is more of a prototype to see whether the idea as such works.
Steve: not sure whether this was one of your pieces. Could well be, but I do have a lot of sycamore from different sources.

I always like work where the rim has been worked like this.

I do agree the the others about the carved line and the angle of the dot. But to go back to the rim, if it flowed around and down to become the carved line I thing the red line would make more sense.
