More Leylandii on fire
« on: March 26, 2016, 12:23:07 AM »
LA: leylandii again. This time in variations of red, and in a vase shape. In hindsight I am not totally happy with the foot of this piece, but I am very happy with the colours and the top end. About 8" tall and 3.5" wide at the top. Chestnut stains and acrylic lacquer.
As usual, all C&C welcome.

A great use of stain that as enhanced the grain very well ...... like the shape of the top of the vase reminiscent of a calla lily.
     Kind regards

This shape looks like it has translated directly from pottery and sits very well as wood.

Your use of colour makes something special out of the Laylandii although I still think for such a strong use of colour it does need a much higher finish.

Can I suggest Danish Oil, lots of coats, with one applied every few days allowing the oil to polymerise and eventually set, thick and shiny. It will need a final buff to bring it out but as a finish on this sort of work it's worth the effort.

Fuzzy

Like these pieces you are doing from Laylandii and the red works well.

we have loads of leylandii that gets burnt - but after seeing this i will start to keep some - i had always thought the quick growth wouldnt be good to turn?
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Laylandii has always been a great wood to turn I have found. This was one i did some time ago. Haven't been able to get my hands on any for a while, think everyone has chopped them all down in fear LOL.

I have another vase from cherry, which is even more of that shape. Unfortunately I have to rework it, because it got chipped on parting off (the imbalance was so strong that I could not hold on to it), and on top of that it's now also developing some cracks. I'll post some pictures when the rework is complete.

I deliberately left the finish at this level (satin). This leylandii was very dry already, and is quite difficult to get a perfectly smooth surface, as it has a tendency keep on losing fibres. These minor imperfections are lost completely in the colour and the satin finish, but would probably stick out like bad fingers in a high gloss finish.

I love the contrast between the black and red, the grain on this piece really shows it up well. I would have liked this piece even more if it were shinier  but it's great as it is still, it's good we all like different ways to finish things.
Well done Fuzzy.
