Oak Bowl
« on: May 13, 2016, 09:15:45 AM »
I have not made much lately because I have been busy teaching this is a Bowl I made yesterday.
A couple of days ago I visited my brother Chris in his workshop on the edge of Dartmoor http://www.dartmoorcreativewoodturning.co.uk/gallery.html
He had just finished a couple of nice Bowls and this is my version of those Bowls.
It is Oak carved scorched and lacquered.
C & C as always

Nice one George!

It looks as if it wants to be picked up and handled.  I like it!

Cheers Dave

Thank you Dave.
I found it hard to take a pic to really see how nice it is .
This is the best I could do but I think it is OK

That's a lovely bowl
The carved flutes are so regular. Did you do them freehand or with a jig? If so how was it constructed? A WIP series would be very helpful to us less experienced folk
Kind Regards

Very nice George, I do love scorched and carved oak. This is a cracker of a bowl, Oak lends itself very well to scorching and ebonising and you have got this one perfect. Well done.

I really like scorched oak and your scalloping of the outside just adds something extra special. Nice one, George.

Really like where you are going with these George, lots of cracks, splits and natural defects that appeal. Different to the 'normal' bowls you tend to see

Great bowl George. I very much like the form and finish. Like others I'd like to know what method you used to carve the bowl, did you use a jig of some sort or was it plotted out and carved out by hand?
My only comment would be regarding the foot, it looks either like the scorching has penetrated the wood or the foot was turned before the scorching took place as the transition between freshly cut and scorched wood isn't crisp. As I said, a very small criticism on an excellent piece.

Cheers
Rick

Hello Rick

Thank you for commenting it was plotted out and carved with a mini grinder and chain saw cutter.
You will always get some bleed over from scorching Rick

George,

Strange but I prefer the underside of this bowl but the wider rim of the first one you showed. I think the wider deeper bowl will appeal to more people but as a utility item, not an artistic form.
