What wood is this?
« on: June 14, 2016, 03:15:05 PM »
I received this email the other day:

My apologies for writing to you directly as I needed to send jpg to identify some wood and the site’s page doesn’t allow that.
I bought a coconut grater but am keen to find out what tree it was cut from. I have tried to identify the wood on webpages but am unsure; it could be narra or mai khaen, but I would be most grateful if you can help me identify the wood.

I asked for a bit more information and received this:
I bought it from a Thai outlet on ebay. I have been told by the seller that the wood comes from the north/north east province in Thailand, but he couldn’t get any further information. Will be grateful for its identification

The email came with pictures.  Four attached and two more on next post.

So can any of you make any suggestions?

Cheers Dave

lots of items from that area of the world that are exported are made from many different species in the acacia family.

the pictures aren't crystal clear but it looks like one of the not so heavy of the acacia genus.

i think the best thing to say is that it's most likely from the acacia family but good luck narrowing it down to a particular species.

It looks like rubber wood to me. That seems to be used a lot for cheap products.

I agree with Paul, looks like rubber wood. Cheap and cheap.
