Purple dot vase
« on: June 19, 2016, 05:08:29 PM »
Some of you may remember a post from me not too long ago, showing a sycamore vase in blue with an orange dot. I promised I had some more in the works. Well, here's the next one. Curly maple, textile dye and some other paint, PU varnish, and a purpleheart dot. This time with slightly different top, and a different decoration.
About 4" diameter and 6" tall. All C&C welcome.

Yep, it works for me! I seem to recall that there was an issue over the cut from the rim down to the dot, which I see that you've addressed in this one...it works really well.

I like the idea but the dot is very rough around the edges and a very poor fit.
Sorry to be negative but the little things are what make the difference

I like what you have done here, both the vase and the decorative work. As George says when you are making something that is obviously veering towards quality work the little things can make all the difference.

All the best

That's a big leap forward from "Red dot vase", the flow and lines certainly work well. As Pete and George have mentioned, improving the precision of the dot would be the icing on the cake. This has all the makings of a stylish series.....where are you taking it next?
Cheers
Rick

Thanks to all for the comments so far. Where am I taking it next? I have a few designs, but I need the right piece of wood. Half of the visual result in this piece here comes from the curling in the grain, and at the moment I haven't got any more of this curly maple in the right dimensions.
Looking at the pictures I can see why I had all the comments about the finish and fit of the dot. To be honest, I struggled with the picture for this vase. What you see here is a version where the white balance was adjusted, but it has done a few other things as well.
I can assure you the red dot is about as polished as a small piece of purple heart can be, and this is a plug fit, i.e. there is no glue involved here. I appreciate what it looks like, but I'd be happy to show the piece to Pete on Friday, since we are going to be at the same show, and then maybe we can have a discussion on how it could be improved further.

I snapped up a space left by a cancellation, that's why I am not on the list.

I keep coming back to this one. I like the design but feel the dot is lost due to both colours being quite dark

I do agree with Derek, I like the concept and execution but the purpleheart does not stand out very well against the green. Hopefully it looks better in natural light.
