6' wall hanging
« on: June 26, 2016, 10:09:57 PM »
Hi all, haven't posted much on here for a few years. Having been asked if I post on here numerous times at events and when demoing especially with regards to my big pieces I thought I'd post this piece which is a commission I've just finished. It's a piece of brown oak 6' long and about 1 1/4 thick, turned as a single plank with various colouring and texturing techniques. A fun piece to turn as cutting fresh air most of the time. Hope you like.

Regards Darren

That's impressive....and good to see so many fingers still attached!
Given that the plank was so thin to start with, it must also have been very flat and you must have done a good job of mounting it to avoid turning more air than you did!
Some good textures on it, too.

Thank you Les, tbh is wasn't particularly flat and it was cupped, I tried to level the surface best I could with an electric plane and the mounted it on an 18" faceplate with with little packers of lead sheet to get it to run as true as possible.

Darren,

that is a very dramatic turning. Was it something made to order or just something you wanted to turn.

And what lathe are you turning a 6' board on please?

Thank you dr4g0nfly, it was a commission piece, the client had seen previous pieces but by the time she was ready to part with the money, I didn't have a big piece available, so it was commissioned with no brief except 6' long & do whatever I want with regards to colour and texturing. I got an old wadkin RS8 and turn big wall pieces on the outboard end with a free standing tool rest.

Regards Darren

I look at hundreds of turnings on various forums and social media and they tend to get a bit 'samei' 'same'i ? :)" but every once in a while something like this comes along and stops the finger scrolling the mouse wheel. Nice one.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Thank you Ed and Graham, like you say graham, things can get a bit staid sometimes, one of the reasons I stopped getting Woodturning mag and going on forums, found that eventually I'd make something not realising I was copying something I'd seen months earlier. Not to say I don't use other people techniques or shapes, but try and put my own twist on it. Only problem with big pieces as Ray Key said at a demo last week where he saw this piece and others of mine, ' bit Nick Agar'ish'!! But I'll take that as a compliment.

Darren.

Having done some large wall art/hangings myself .I know how difficult it is to get a good clean finish...... Having looked
at this piece you seem to have achieved the optimum finish.  Well Done
