Large blanks - Oxford Area
« on: July 18, 2016, 08:16:09 AM »
Morning all

I have has a query about the availability (or otherwise) of big bowl blanks and vase blanks, via our Facebook page.  Mark lives just outside Oxford.  I suggested Tree Surgeons.  Any other ideas?

Cheers Dave

The toolpost has a very good range of blanks, but obviously at a price. They are in Didcot.

Worth contacting any large estates as well. The gardeners sometimes have large lumps from old trees they have to trim or cut down. Tree surgeons (at least the ones I use) often don't like burning or chipping laburnum or yew so are happy to let you have the wood, sometimes free but at worst a lot cheaper than through a wood dealer.

I suppose a big question to answer here first is whether the enquirer has the space, time and interest to deal with green wood?

We have a woodturner / sawmill owner who brings wood to all of the Didcot Woodturners club meetings. Details at didcotwoodturners.co.uk
He often has pretty big pieces.

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?
