camphor laurel with embellishments
« on: August 14, 2016, 12:20:18 AM »
Medium sized hollow vessel with embellishments, great colour in piece of a large branch. It had a few splits due to I think wind shake, not sure as we/I dont see much of this down here. Plus I fumbled it a couple of times and bounced it off the concrete floor via the bed.

Buffed with EEE and soaked in Danish Oil, dried and a final buff again. 9.5" 23 cm 6" 15 cm.

What I like about this is the way that the carved spiralm lines interact with the margins between the heartwood and sapwood, it really adds interest. How come, when I fumble, it doesn't turn out like this!

That's one very nice fumble Hughie  :)

Love the contrast in colours of the wood.

It took me a couple of hours to fix the damage each time. Kinda had to rearrange a few spirals.
The air was fairly blue on the second time around, I am glad nobody was around catch my little tantrum :)

Hughie,

I'm not sure whether to look from the top down, or the base up.

From the top, all the spirals start (almost) the same width and then scatter and change, new ripples arrive and disappear in a tumultuous sea,

Or looking upwards, that tumultuous sea of different ripples all come together and smooth out to create a harmonious rim.

Works both ways for me, I think one of your more interesting pieces.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Another very nice piece and the random pattern really works with that shape
