English walnut vase
« on: September 05, 2016, 11:00:16 AM »
A small endgrain vase from branchwood given to me by a friend some time ago.  It's been languishing in a corner of the workshop for a while....couldn't decide what to do with it.  Eventually used it for practise with my new(ish) crown revolution hollower.  Was a little tricky at first as it's really quite dry, but once I got the hang of the tool it was pretty good fun.  7" tall x 4" max diameter, 3mm walls.  C&C welcome.

Nice shape, nice wood, nice spalting. Not much to be improved here, from my point of view.

Chris,

I'm guessing this is branch wood as it is the pale sapwood that shows all round, non of the dark heartwood we more readily recognise as Walnut. Nothing wrong with that, the pale colour sometimes works very well.

I like the shape, and the faint spalting gives just enough additional interest to the vase to give it a little extra life.

Great shape and like already stated that this is the lighter part of the tree which in this case is a good thing so that you can see the light spalting associated with it.

A good job all round

Thanks folks.  It is indeed branchwood Bryan.  Think I might put the rest outside for a while to see if it will spalt some more.

There's a good flow on the outer curve of that vase and the spalting adds just enough to the sapwood to make it more interesting.
