Unable to stand for long periods
« on: January 10, 2017, 09:41:42 PM »
Hi. I suffer from ME/CFS. Standing for more than about an hour causes quite bad pain. I am looking at various ways in which to support by body weight while at the lathe. Standing task chairs are about as close as I can see working. Has anyone any suggestions? Many thanks.

Check out Tony Wilson on YouTube. He uses a wheelchair and has his lathe set up at the right height to turn seated.

Thanks Eddie, but I'm really looking to stay standing. It would require quite an amount of work to convert the lathe height.

It might also be worth looking at Perching Stool , they are very stable with rubber feet and can easily be adjusted
in height  and angle, had one of these for a good few years now and it is used in both the house and hut.
You can get them from disability out lets and a few on line store`s  Amazon and Others

I have ME and Fybromaralgia,so have the same problem, what I do is have a sit on a garden chair I have in my workshop every 15-20 mins for five or ten mins, doinf a bit of carving with my flexydrive motor to stop the boredom of being seated with nothing to do,I`ve found after 5-10 mins I need to stand again to move the pain elsewhere again.

Hi Eric.

That is what I have been doing and find it annoying as it sort of breaks my stride, and I lose concentration if you know what I mean. I think I'm going to try one of these perching stools. Have you ever tried one?

God bless

Bill Jones used to have a back rest that swung into place when he was working, that might take some pressure off.

I`ve found with what I have this works for me,as you lose consentration anyway if you don`t have a break to sit, then accidents can or will happen, speaking from experience.
