Wall hanging platter
« on: October 17, 2016, 06:02:22 PM »
Cut from a fine piece of oak burr from the eastern side of the Berwyn Hills, and measuring about 18" diameter.

The three dark rings separating the different areas have been scorched, scoured and limed, to give an aged feel to the piece.

The outer ring and the inner circular panel are both convex and have been gilded with gold gilding cream, allowed to harden for 24 hours and then hard-buffed to remove most of the gold. I buffed them with a cotton-wheel that I usually use only for buffing scorched areas, and this not only removed most of the excess gold, but also darkened the surface. these two areas look quite aged, but the gold left in the grain of the burr catches the light if you move past it, and glisten attractively. The wider ring, between these two areas, is concave and has been sealed and waxed with microcrystaline.

C&C always welcome...Les

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Les,

I like this for two reasons, yes it is beautiful but more is the words,
from the eastern side of the Berwyn Hills
.

Being able to tell someone where the wood came from, and why it had to come down I find a great selling point.

Did you notice the Mice? I call them 'Pier Mice', made from boardwalk planks being replaced at Clevedon Pier. They are made to sell through the Pier shop, great little sellers because of people can relate to the wood they are made from in just the same way.

Thank you George/Graham/Pete, I'm really pleased that you like it.

You're so right, Bryan....many of my commissions feature the fact that people can have wood from a very personal source made into something personal for them.....it's always a very strong selling point.

A great looking platter and like the way the added colours help to show it off to it's best

Cracking piece Les. Really like the way that you are doing the scorching.

Grand piece Les, thanks for sharing.
You have centered this spot on.  I see so many where the maker has maximum diameter as the priority regardless of the overall pattern. Love the scorching/gilding effects but personally would have cleaned up the burr in the last photo
