Textured vase/pot
« on: October 19, 2016, 10:46:27 PM »
Here's a little piece I finished tonight. Sycamore vase/pot, 6" x 3" with a small band of colour near the top.

C & C's welcome

I like this, Gary....the coarseness of the texture sits well alongside the coloured band. Is the band a paint technique, or is it a schlag metal?

Hi Les many thanks, I'm glad you like it. Yes the coloured band is a paint technique using iridescent paints. Got another one on the gojust now and going to use some Gold,Silver and Copper leaf instead of paint and see how it turns out.

Hi Gary

The texture looks great. I'm not so keen on the coloured band and think that what you are trying with the gold leaf will make it pop.

All the best

I am undecided on this piece , Initial thoughts are , Overdone on the texturing ,

Maybe 2 bands of texturing one above and one below the coloured band ,

These are my personal thoughts ( But who am I  ;) )

Not so keen on this, but the texturing looks good to me. Malcolm.

I'm still scratching my head, I cannot see what method you used to get that texture on sycamore. But I really like the effect.

I am guessing a wire brush in a drill?
Like this sort of texturing a lot but am not sure about the band. Having a contrasting  band should work I'd have thought but here it seems too much for me personally.

I consider that and we can be fairly sure the vase is turned spindle-wise, but I don't see a wire brush leavings such a neat effect, it's too close grained a timber. It would happen on an open grained wood like oak or ash, but sycamore would 'fluff' up more than gouge such clean cuts type lines.

Unless I'm proved wrong of course.

Many thanks for ALL the comments.  Brian, just to set your mind at ease, the texture was achieved by firstly running a Dremel up and down the form with a parallel bit in it then , yes, a rotary wire brush in a drill to give it the final look then Chestnut Ebonising lacquer over the top.
Again thanks for your comments all, whether you liked it or not.

Best Regards  Gary

Gary,

thank you for the explanation. An interesting texturing technique for timbers that are hard to texture.
