The lines should be continues not a succession of dots

May I suggest that you simplify your designs (for now)....just choose a single element and research it....look at how cog teeth really were shaped and reproduce them well, then, when you master the single element, start to build more complex designs.

  I think you have the nib setting to high, each line when drawn should start off as a faint light brown line, this will make it easier to flow you lines without burning into the softer growth of the wood.

The go back over again and again very slowly increasing the temperature.  This will stop the look of  a Dot to Dot drawing. Learn on close grain wood like Beech.

Thank you all. All comments taken on board, would rather have sensible comments like these rather than a lot of "Thats nice" which I find there are plenty who are afraid to make constructive criticism.
