Decorated bowl
« on: April 14, 2017, 04:08:15 PM »
This made from spalted cherry (we think) and is 10" diameter. Mo decided to keepthe decoration to a mionimum not to spoil the natjural beauty in the wood. The butterfly is a gatekeeper and it is on a piece of bramble, the food of choice for it. Finished with microcrystalline  C&C welcome.

Could be right Steve, it was in a batch that was probably mostly sycamore but I had never seen this sort of colouring on that before.

Only our thoughts Pete the butterfly seems to disappear into the wood and although there is no denying Mo`s talent
feel this one would look better on a plainer wood or perhaps a brighter butterfly to make it stand out. After saying that
though  very much like the simple minimal design.

Hi,
I liked the decoration on the other pieces you posted recently but think this piece would be fine without it. In my humble opinion I think it adds nothing to the piece rather detracts from the attractiveness of the wood.
Cheers
Pat

I am with Steve, this definitely looks like an acer species. Doesn't have to be sycamore, could be a field maple, which often has all sorts of colours in it. I do love this bowl. minimalist form, well executed and then to top it off the little butterfly. Maybe a bit whimsical, but in my opinion just what was needed here.

I like that a lot, and especially the butterfly placed on the 'plainest' piece of the grain. Well done to both of you. Malcolm.

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting reading different peoples views on it. Have to wait and see what the paying public think LOL.

Mo,

with the interesting grain and knot in Pete's turning, your minimalist butterfly is just enough without being overpowering.

I'm enjoying this series immensely.
