oak and Bubinga hollow form.
« on: May 01, 2017, 09:34:31 PM »
had an afternoon in the shed and got some turning done. decided that the log of oak that was laying there was needed turning in to a hollow form its moisture content when I started was 30%. So I knew I was going to get wet doing it. it turned out to be a rather good project to do. it is 7x6 1/2" in size and I went rather close in arears to going through. looking inside the form you can see light through in places. just hope it doesn't crack on me now I have brought it in doors. the finial is from a bit of be burbinger and was rather powdery to turn. all comments welcome.

Might be a mistake to bring it indoors. I might have been better somewhere cooler
Nice Form

I would leave it there for a few days. If I were you I would get hold of a moisture meter they are quite cheap on Ebay and give you an Idea of moisture content.

Something like above

There is something about Oak, the colour and grain that calls to us woodturners. It's almost a shame that the pith is so far up the shoulder, it would be a wonderful point of interest if it was more visible on the side.

Not 100% sure the finial is needed, but it does not look too much out of place.

lacquered and finished happy with it now. yes George in the house and fine thank you for the help as well. the only thing is now the wife thinks she is making clam to it. I think I need to sell it and get more timber but not sure of what price to put on it. it is 10" to top of finial and 6 1/2 wide. what would others put on this sort of size.
