Burr oak wallhanging, Game of Thrones style.
« on: June 04, 2017, 02:38:59 PM »
My latest piece completed, bit of a collaboration with Canadian turner Bruce Hodgeson who came over for a days tuition on turning large pieces and to try out some of the techniques I use. Made from a slab of burr oak, 45"x24"x3" approximately, various colouring and texturing techniques used. As the piece was 3" thick I decided to do some undercutting to the textured band to create more of a          3-dimensional look.

Never seen Game of Thrones so haven't a clue there but this I do like, especially the decorative work towards the centre. Is it pyro'd or embossed?

Hi Pete, never seen game of thrones myself either, but seems to be about vikings and that era, the decorative bit is textured using a micromotor drill with a ball shape burr.

Regards Darren.

The piece has good visual impact with the extra Art work lifting it to another level...... All the elements blend
      very well together.
       Kind Regards Tony di

Big, Bold, Bright (enough alliteration) and in your face.

Great looking piece of wall art (and I must get to watch GoT sometime as well).

Thank you Pete, Tony and Di, Ed and Dragonfly for your kind words. These large piece keep getting more and more elaborate but I love challenging my abilities in all fields of Woodturning and these give me plenty of scope to try new effects and designs.

Regards Darren

Love this one with the mixture of natural edge, texturing and color just a great combination with no piece overpowering the rest

Cheers Eric, yes they seem to be developing quite quickly at the mo, a constant challenge to keep coming up with different concepts but am enjoying the journey.
