oak end grain painted bowl.
« on: August 24, 2017, 10:07:30 PM »
have been turning a lump of green oak the last few nights and then decided to add a bit of colour to it. I have used spirit based red, blue and yellow. then I have finished with a lacquer to seal it in. all comments welcome.

It's very difficult to be objective about this piece because the images are seriously over-exposed.

Its always a hard choice putting stains on oak, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't ..... can't comment
on the camera work as we struggle as well.

Have to agree with Ed on this Dennis. The colours make it look very muddy in appearance. I think some woods take colour better than others

Dennis you have not said how long you have been turning, if you are a beginner I think you have done very well although there are some issues that you should address. The colouring on this example did not come out too good (according to the photographs) and the shape could be a little more refined. If you expand the images you can see that there are scratches on the finished item, these can be eliminated by sanding with the grain. These things will start to occur naturally as you get more experienced. But we all had to learn.

I think the colouring is a little bit too strong, a more gentle colour (thinned with meths or similar) would have brought the grain out without darkening the wood so much. Wood will darken naturally over time, no need to hasten the process.

Like George intermates the form does not flow well but the fact it was green wood you've turned and I can see where it has moved gives it added points of interest.
