Half Track
« on: August 26, 2017, 05:21:54 PM »
I know technically not turning but there was some involved in the making of this model, mostly to do with the drive train, front wheel and gear boxes.

I have not posted much in the way of any woodworking/woodturning as I have been occupied with this little build. I do not keep a record of how long it takes but all I do know is that there are a load of bits that required making some on the small size.
The finished model measures 19 1/2" long 7 1/2" wide and 7" tall.
Made from loads of different wood out of the scrap box the most expensive outlay was the two cans of finish and not counting time.

An impressive model Derek, so much detail. I assume this isn't the first of a kind you've made.
Thanks for posting....cheers Rick

Quite remarkable, Derek. I can't help but wonder what its future is.....is there a child in the family who is going to be the proud owner or is this purely a collector's piece (the latter, I imagine).
Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thank you both.

A display piece as there are many pieces that are very fragile. Just out of interest there are over 320 parts just for the chassis and tracks without all the upper structures. Many pieces of wood had to be planed down to 1/16" thick which was great fun and had to be done with hand tools.

Not the sort of thing I make apart from perhaps the wheels but having done quite a bit of miniature work for dolls house collectors appreciate the work involved and the time that you must have spent. A lot of detailed work init

Thank you Ed, BHT and Pete.

I will bring it to the next meeting, and possibly the bowl if I finish it

Something I've learned from this forum is that wood can sometimes be a canvas for further work, turned or otherwise. There is turned work in this Deuce and a Half, so why should you not show it off proudly.

It is an excellent piece of work and highly detailed, well done.

Have to agree with Bryan. Turning incorporated with other skills is all part of the fun IMHO.
