Punky Silver Birch and sanding sealer
« on: December 08, 2017, 09:49:16 AM »
18 months ago I had a silver birch felled in the garden. I kept 'the best bits' and just stored the trunk pieces (up to 10in dia) along the side of the garden. Have just found time to deal with them - the spalting is good but it has gone too far. Needless to say I have put some on the lathe and rough turned and am now soaking in sanding sealer - will this work or should I just ditch the lot and put it down to experience?

If it's a punky as it sounds, I don't thing Sanding Sealer will rescue it.

Wood Hardener might but it is a much more unfriendly chemical compound.

I think I'd be inclined to put this one down to experience.

agreed.

i don't know of a family that will spalt and rot quicker than the betulaceae...

check after 6 months in the future and i'd put it all on a pallet out in the open as it will spalt more controllably...
