Coloured Vase
« on: March 27, 2012, 08:19:20 PM »
Hi I've been experimenting.
Not very keen on my colour scheme.
How do you like the form?
The pattern was done with a Proxxon mini Rasp (the red one). with the vase was held on the lathe. The colour is spirit stain applied with a perfume type spray.

Hi John,

As a comment on the shape, it's the transition from the coloured area to the upper portion that looks a little off to me. I think it's the proportions, the top should taper in (be waisted) more, it's too much the same size as the base.

I quite like the shape without the upper portion, that works for me but would be more a cup or open vase.

You say you've applied the colour with a perfume sprayer - I presume an atomiser (the sort with a squeeze bulb?) - don't put the colour scheme down, it'as bold enough to be interesting. If it's your first go with colour, it's an interesting effect you've achieved.

You don't say what wood or give dimensions though.

Hi dr4g0nfly,
Thanks for your comments, I agree with the top and bottom sizing, Here comes the excuse. I had internal chucking points at both ends and as the wood was showing signs of splitting I kept the thickness on the generous side.
The wood is part dried Leylanii, 310mm high 155mm at the widest point.
No this isn't my first coloured peice but I don't colour very much.
The sprayer I used is the plunger type.
