Life's a bowl of cherry.
« on: May 31, 2018, 08:37:11 PM »
Yep, a bowl of cherry. I bought a few hundred lumps of home grown timber from a retiring wood turner in Worcester, England, and amongst them were several pieces of cherry, each about 14" long, cut out of a 14" log. They were wax-sealed many years ago and bone dry by now. The problem was that they had stress/drying voids reaching in from the bark, so most of the sapwood had to be cut away. The result is a 12" diameter x 5" deep bowl out of (mostly) heartwood with lovely grain.
C&C always welcome...Les

Well - it is and should be cherished.

The form is just right and makes the most of the grain patterns.
I had trouble with the dark interface between inner and outer bowls. Is it a fillet or just a dark line?  Whichever, it works well.
I trust you were unaffected by the recent inundation.
Regards
Nick

Hi Nick...the accent ring inside the main rim is a scorched step where the rim thickens up by a couple of mm into the wall of the bowl.

...neither am I, Steve, but I feel that a simple line or two often helps to accentuate a shape.

Les, I've looked at this umpteen times and there is only one thing wrong with it, it's perfect!

Not the normal rescued, stitched together, work that is your standard hallmark. Beautiful yes, but it does not shout 'Gwyntog' at all.

Are you on a new path?
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

...no Bryan...same old path, that is to say that I will make what sells, as long as I enjoy making it.....I just don't usually get such fine pieces of timber.
