Once again an interesting thread. I use the green plastic coated wire from the garden centre (2 different diameters). Clean off the plastic and you find stainless steel wire underneath. I turn up a couple of toggles similar to those found on duffle coats years ago and just twist the wire into place. As long as you just hold with the finger tips they are fine. I imagine the wire that you use for pyrography might perform better but it would be more expensive!

Beauty of the guitar string is that it is strong and also comes indifferent thicknesses so you can have 1/2 doz different sizes from a set. Incidentally a set of guitar strings will cost you about £3 for a cheap set and you can get two or three burner wires from each string. Works out at about 25p each if you use scrap wood for the toggles.
