Spice bowl
« on: September 01, 2018, 09:09:20 PM »
My first post on this forum, so be gentle with me! Here is a prototype I made, a result of me experimenting turning off-set lumps of wood. The end result got some little lids, and the spice bowl was the result (essential for all those who enjoy making curry). It's only a prototype (note the incorrectly spaced bowls around the perimeter!) but the idea seems to have been a hit with those who have seen it. I might yet be tempted to make a better version... Wood is lightly spalted sycamore, with walnut knobs for the lids.

An interesting idea which could be shown to potential customers... do you like this one or that one ?
Or the lids might have different knobs and lid timber/shapes as a design feature. In use one would remember which spice is where ?

It gets my vote as well. Especially tegh different knobs and lid decoration.

They will help you to eventually remember what spice is under each lid and not have to keep looking.

Roll on your next post.

nice looking piece Percy, I agree with Bryan having different knobs on the lids is a good idea identifying what spice is in each one

Continuing with the theme you could have a sharp knob for pickling spices, one covered in rose thorns for hot chillies a lid with every knob on in miniature to make one big knob for all spice a red one (Padauk?) for paprika. See where we are going here.
The only problem I can see(SWMBO just pointed out) that the spices will not all run out at the same time so cleaning could be a problem or wasteful. I still think it is a good idea, love the concept.

Thanks for all the comments - all very helpful. I've just finished another of these spice bowls - the prototype version in the original post sold straight away and I got commissioned to make some more, including this one from today (picture below). Stuck with the idea of different knobs on the lids to help identify whatever might be stored beneath. It's a shame they are not easier to make, as they seem to sell very well. However, I have quickly realised that any off-set turned piece isn't going to be a quick job - bowl turning at 280 rpm is time consuming!

Have a think about making the individual bowls suitable for glass inserets so they can be cleaned when necessary. If yku use square sided ones yoiu could drill the bowl out quickly instead of having cto go therough the off centre hassle? Just a thought
