Hi
I have a Axminster hobby lathe, if you have one is yours free standing or bolted to a bench.
Thanks
Dave

I have a record lathe of similar size and mine is bolted to its own bench.

With any lathe the more stable it is the better , Don't want it jumping about  :o

Bit concerned about breaking the cast feet

Davej I wouldn't have thought you have to bolt it down enough for that to happen. Yes it should be secure but I would be inclined to put rubber or leather washers inbetween just to dampen the vibration, although if you are turning balanced pieces there shouldn't be too much vibration.

Not quite the same problem, but I have always thought that if vibration is a problem you are better off bracing the lathe at the top, not at the feet. I do a lot of biggish bowls from logs and although converting to a variable speed drive has helped a lot I still brace my floor standing old Viceroy by clamping it to the wall, and to my metalwork lathe.

Fixing the feet must induce a lot of strain in the structure and cannot be as effective.
