Bowl with inlay
« on: December 02, 2018, 04:47:21 PM »
I have a big board of sycamore that I finally got to chopping a bit off and turning. The piece is pretty big (approx. 450mm diameter) so I thought I'd try leaving a very wide rim and have a go at some walnut inlay to add some interest. Reasonably pleased with the results, although I was torn between trying a geometric pattern (which I ended up doing) or trying something more abstract. If I try another, I might go with an abstract design, but thought I'd stick to something fairly simple for a first try. C&c welcome.

Very nice but I personally would have made the bowl part larger as you seem to have a large area between the pattern and the rim of the bowl

I like this, so well made Percy. I can also see where Derek is coming from as it would also work with a slightly bigger dish. Les

Cheers for the feedback - I agree with you both. I think I'd been so focused on getting the walnut inlay into the rim, I'd not noticed how out of proportion it looked. I might pop it back on the lathe and take a bit more out of the middle to widen the bowl. Thanks for the help!

I thing the camera angle could have flattered the platter a little more, it is a little flat across the turning making it difficult to fully appreciate.

Looking at what I can see of the inlay, it appears to be very exact , not an easy thing to accomplish I would imagine.

The camera angle wasn't doing it any favours I don't think. When I present my latest turning to my long-suffering wife for her (often brutally honest) feedback, she often asks me what the piece is used for or if it is merely decorative? Heeding her question and the advice from this forum, here is a picture of the revised piece, which now has a larger dish which will make it much more useful! I'm a lot happier with this version. Cheers guys!

I think that looks much better. I love the way you've done the inlay, very clean lines and a lovely pattern. One to be proud of . . .  :)

It now has a good sense of balance between the inlays and the space around them. A wise decision to alter it and well executed to boot.
