Natural edge platter with fruit
« on: December 05, 2018, 04:35:11 PM »
This platter/shallow bowl came from a piece of elm burr (a rare treasure around here these days sadly) with fruit made from yew and alder burr. It's 12" in diameter at its widest with a deliberately chunky rim - any bowls/platters that I make from burrs tend to have thicker rims as I always feel that it tells part of the story of the wood.

Apologies for the picture quality - the light has washed out some of the colour, particularly in the fruit... serves me right for letting the dog hold the camera!

C&c welcome as always.

Richard

That's a lovely ensemble. I particularly like the very simple shape of the bowl - and the thick edge; helps the wood do the talking.

Thin work is all well and good but sometimes chunky is the route to take and by doing so in your case it has proved to have worked. I like it a simple shape which allows for the wood to show it's natural beauty
Fruit looks good as well

Thanks Derek - couldn't agree more re 'chunky'.

If anything I'd say the stalks were a bit big, but then again you needed to fit your Logo on the end of them, so that can be accepted.

I also like the bowl/dish, more so as it's an idea of what to do with a tin slice of interesting timber, not always an easy thing to use up.
